He didn't. The Lex who "returned" in the Finale was the result of much cloning trial-and-error, we are told by Lionel when he captures Tess and tries to remove her heart. A heart was the only organ that Lex had been unable to successfully replicate. In the end, the heart that Lex gets is Lionel's, thanks to a deal he (Lionel) makes with Darkseid.

That's some serious shark jumping -- on top of all the jumping of sharks the show did years before the finale. Easy, miss. I've got you.

You didn't know, Hypoxic? I know you and I tend to see eye-to-eye on Smallville, but I sort of thought you'd seen the show all the way through. Anyway, yeah, that's how it went. Funniest part for me is, over the past couple of weeks I'd taken to having the show on in the background while working on a couple of projects, and I'd also taken to reading through some of Neal's reviews of the same episodes. Generally, I didn't read the letters sections of his review, mostly because it was too late to join the dialogue. But anyway, there's this one (I forget which) where one of the letters totally calls the cloning business. And this was back in season 8. Talk about building your creation into such a rut that people can see where it's going to go two years out.
