Smallville

July 2, 2002: “Smallville” in the Philippines

As "Smallville" continues to succeed all around the world, Superman fan Gerry Sibal sent us an email from the Philippines to file this report in regards to the interesting "Smallville" situation in his part of the world...

Over here in the Philippines, excitement is also reaching feverish pitch with a teaser from a local station promising to air "Smallville" weekly for us Superman fans. But it's been 3 months already and we haven't seen the shadows of the likes of Tom Welling, Kristin Kreuk, and Michael Rosenbaum.

The other day, I got one of the biggest surprises of my life when out of nowhere, I saw a "Smallville" VCD (video compact disc) in a video store. Mind you, the store is one of our biggest and the VCD is of course an original. Puzzled, I grabbed a copy and asked the store lady how long they've had these VCDs. The reply was more shocking... since May! With news about Amazon's difficulty securing copies for its customers, I was really surprised but tremendously happy to get my own copy of "Smallville". I guess the store is clueless too about the show because it was placed among older films and some aerobics CDs that they sell. I found it in the most obscure corner of the store.

Without hesitation, I immediately watched the VCD upon reaching home and boy oh boy, now I know why it was watched by almost 8 million viewers in the States during its premiere. The plot was great, and the cast - I'll be disappointed if I don't see them in a movie version. There were 2 episodes included in the double VCD pack at a very reasonable price of 325 pesos (about US$6.50). Now I'm more anxious to see it on our local TV channel.
