Smallville

November 27, 2002: “Smallville” is Super for WB

USA TODAY recently published an article discussing the success of "Smallville" with Executive Producer Al Gough and Programming Chief Jordan Levin. Here's an excerpt from the article...

Smallville's audience is growing faster than a speeding bullet. And the saga about a teenage Clark Kent, pre-Superman, is powering WB to a 14% ratings spike in a season that has seen more losses than gains for TV networks.

But in its second year, Smallville is the more powerful locomotive. Ratings for the show are up 23% from this point last year, its freshman season. Though its average audience of 8.4 million viewers would be middling on the Big Three networks ‹ last week's Smallville ranked 76th ‹ the show is WB's most popular, eclipsing its oldest, 7th Heaven.

"We're definitely seeing growth in adults and men that follows the plan we've always had, which is attracting teenagers first, who generally feed pop-cultural trends," WB programming chief Jordan Levin says. "We look for the heat that comes from that demographic to broaden out our audience."

What's driving Smallville's gain, apart from a sophomore lift that also has helped Fox's 24, NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent and ABC's The Bachelor? Executive producer Al Gough says the family dynamic between Clark and his working-class farmer parents provides the emotional core and is a large part of its appeal. "Most of the time (on TV), the kids are smart, the parents are clueless and they never talk to each other. Ours is the antithesis of that. He turns to them and relies on their guidance."
