San Diego Comic-Con 2007: Featuring Ancillary Superman Homepage Action!By Neal Bailey
That's right, we're going to San Diego, too! We can't be stopped! No defenestration until the editing's done, and ceaseless cons until in crushing debt! These are the words of Li Po! I say ancillary because we're not sanctioned, but we're still gonna banzai.
The San Diego Comic-Con staff politely informed me that without work for a major publisher, I wouldn't even be considered for a table, and all of the tables filled up in February anyway, so we won't have a table. BUT, we will be present, and we have plans to meet you guys and crash some very cool parties.
I'm going to mention the Superman fan-specific stuff here, and indicate whether I'll be there or not. If you guys want to meet up on the side, feel free to shoot me a line by emailing me. I'm seeking after-hours parties, general debauchery, and scoops.
For non-Supes stuff, check out the full schedule at the Comic-Con website.
DAY ONE (Thursday):
10:30-11:30 DC Talent Search Orientation: For you artists out there. DC doesn't look at unsolicited writing, alas. I won't be attending this one. Room 4, and repeats on Friday and Saturday.10:30-11:30 Comic Arts Conference Session #1: Comics in Educational Settings: Despite the semi-boring title, this is an examination of comics as a literary medium. I'll be attending if I can to thank Danny Fingeroth, who I recently interviewed, for his time. Room 30-AB.
11:30-12:30 Writing with Mark Verheiden: Mark Verheiden, of Superman, Smallville, and other related Supes stuff, along with Battlestar Galactica, will do a nuts-and-bolts Q and A in Room 4. I will likely attend this, but may pass, depending on how nuts-and-bolts over submissions it seems to be.
12:15-1:15 DC Countdown...to the End? DiDio and company talk about Countdown. Room 6B. I will attend this if possible. Space may be limited.
12:30-2:00 Drawing Style and Storytelling will feature Darwyn Cooke in Room 30CDE. I won't be attending this, but Cooke is awesome.
1:30-2:30 Spotlight on Matt Wagner: Matt will speak about Grendel, and you can likely ask about Trinity. Room 1AB. I will not be attending this.
1:30-3:30 Paramount Pictures: A panel about upcoming Paramount movies, but if you're interested in what happened with JJ and his Supes attempt, this'd be a good place to ask questions. I won't be attending. Hall H.
2:30-3:30 Spotlight on Darwyn Cooke: Another Cooke appearance. I won't be attending. Room 1AB.
3:00-4:00 DC: Crossing Over: A panel about media crossover, featuring Paul Dini, Greg Rucka, and other DC names. I will be attending this if possible. Room 5AB.
5:00-6:00 Bill Plympton Goes to the Dark Side: This is Superman unrelated, but I'm a huge fan of Plympton, so I'll likely attend this if possible. Room 5AB.
6:00-7:00 DC Group Therapy: Geoff Johns and Dan DiDio, among others, talk about team books. I will attend this if I can. Room 6A.
8:30-10:30 World Premiere! Superman: Doomsday. I'll definitely be shooting to see this. I hope you will, too. If tickets are scarce, there is an encore presentation. Ballroom 20
DAY TWO (Friday):
10:30-12:00 Warner Bros. Rucka fans will be interested to meet Kate Beckinsale, starring in Whiteout. I'll be attending if possible. Hall H.11:30-12:30 Spotlight on Paul Dini: Also featuring Dan DiDio. I won't be attending. Room 5AB.
1:00-2:00 Comic Arts Conference Session #7: Of Supermen and Kids with Dreams: The Secret Origins of Superman: An extrapolation of the evolution of Supes. I'll be attending this if possible. Room 30AB.
2:30-4:00 Dimension Films: Frank Darabont will be previewing The Mist, one of my favorite King books. I will attend if possible. Ballroom 20.
4:15-5:45 Warner Bros Animation: The Batman/Legion of Super-Heroes. A panel on the Warner Brothers animations. I will not be attending. Room 6B.
4:30-5:30 Center for Cartoon Studies: How to Dramatically Improve Your Comics: A workshop on writing/creating. I may attend. Room 24A.
6:00-7:00 DC Nation: Panel with Dan DiDio. I will be attending if possible. Room 6A.
DAY THREE (Saturday):
10:30-11:30 Meet the Press: Writing About Comics: Entertainment Weekly and other folks talk about reviewing comics. I might attend to attempt to speak to these guys about potential employment. Room 3.12:00-1:30 Wolfman and Kesel Writing Comics: Marv Wolfman and Barbara Kesel conduct a comic writing workshop. I will likely attend if possible. Room 30CDE.
1:30-2:45 DCU: New Worlds Order: Too many major artists to count talk about what's going on with Countdown. I will be attending if possible. Room 6B.
2:45-3:45 Supernatural Screening and Q and A: Jensen Ackles will be present for Smallville fans. I will not be attending. Room 6CDEF.
5:00-6:00 Wildstorm: Stormfront will be in room 5AB, and will feature Jim Lee and Gail Simone, for you fans. I will not be attending.
6:00-7:00 Spotlight on Mark Verheiden: Pretty much what it says. I will not be attending. Room 2.
6:30-7:30 Smallville Screening and Q and A: Al Gough and Miles Millar will debut the new Supergirl. I will be there with bells on. I'll be the one Gough is chasing with a stick screaming like a girl. Room 6CDEF.
7:45-8:45 Comedy Central's The Sarah Silverman Program: As Sarah is my future wife when I rule the world with an iron fist, I think I might attend this. I'm not one of those guys who geeks out on shaking the hand of a hot chick I admire, but I love a girl with a dirty mouth. Besides, it's the same room as Smallville's Q and A. Provided I'm alive, I'll be in Room 6CDEF.
DAY FOUR (Sunday):
10:30-11:45 Jack Kirby Tribute: What it says. I will not be attending. Room 1AB.10:30-11:30 DC Big Guns: Geof Johns, Paul Dini, Grant Morrison and more talk about the DC big guns, with hints of where they're going. I will attend if possible. Room 6A.
12:30-2:00 Pro/Fan Trivia: Meet Mark Waid and test his mettle! I won't be attending. Room 4.
That's it! But don't think that's it. I'm gonna be setting up breakfasts, dinners, there's a Superman 1, 2, and Returns along with Mole Men screening I'm getting info on, and a number of other great ideas I'm working up. That's just the schedule. In the next week, look for a finalized schedule, more events when folks give me a call or an idea, and chaos, unbridled chaos! I mean, this is supposed to be a vacation for me, don't expect me to stop moving. SELAH! Buy the ticket, take the ride, right? I WILL be bringing my guitar.
