October 10, 2010: Remembering Two Supermen

Chris Reeve Kirk Alyn Today, October 10, is the anniversary of the day Christopher Reeve passed away. In 2004 the world was shocked to learn that the former Man of Steel had died while in coma after going into Cardiac Arrest due to complications relating to his spinal cord injury.

There's a wonderful audio interview with Christopher Reeve archived at CBC Digital Archives from 1982 where he talks about winning the role of the character and how playing Superman opened many doors for him in his career.

October 8, 2010 marked 100 years since the birth of Kirk Alyn, the big screen's first Man of Steel, who starred in two Superman movie serials in 1948 and 1950. The LA Times published an article on the anniversary of Kirk's birthday.

Kirk Alyn's career spanned more than 53 years appearing in 60 films and musicals. In addition to portraying Superman and Clark Kent, Kirk Alyn also starred as the hero in Blackhawk, Federal Agents vs. Underworld, Daughter of Don Q and Radar Patrol vs. Sky King. In later years, Kirk Alyn remained in demand for personal appearances at comic book conventions and was always a fan favorite. Several projects honoring Kirk Alyn's life are in development stages.
