April 27, 2015: John Romita Jr. on the Future of Superman

Superman #40 IGN.com caught up with artist John Romita Jr. to talk to him about what fans can expect from upcoming issues of "Superman", writing and drawing issue #40, getting Clark Kent drunk, and the changes to the character post-Convergence. Here's part of the interview...

IGN: So what can we expect from the Free Comic Book Day issue? Romita: Uh... I don't want to give it away! [Laughs] I'm not supposed to give anything away. Everything plays out in a linear fashion, let's just put it that way. With all the other titles involved in the process of post-new power Superman and Clark, changes are coming up. I would be as suspicious as everybody, including readers, if they read that he's messing around with his powers and it's changing him slightly.

Because nothing hasn't been done before, so we have to find a way to do something different, and I think we really have. The other writers and artists are doing amazing work on this. As everybody bounces back and forth, the stuff that they're doing, my mailboxes are getting filled up with these fantastic pages of artwork. All it does is make me work harder, because -- they're just embarrassing me, because they're so good. They're making me look bad!

IGN: [Laughs] You'll be drawing Superman in the new outfit with the new haircut, right?

    Romita: That's correct.

IGN: On Free Comic Book Day, a lot of people come in that don't necessarily always read comic books. They're going to see Superman with a new power, new outfit, new look. Is this going to be a good jumping-on point for new readers?

Romita: Yeah, because at that point that it comes out -- I think it's well known -- it's an extension of what happens to him in, they call it the "flare-out," as he finds out that it's an extension of his heat vision. He can't control it, and he's got to learn to control it. Then he gets addicted to it, because he enjoys the on-and-off of suddenly being able to be a normal human being -- which he's never done before. So there's a lot of things that are connected to it.

I think by the time the beginning of May rolls around, I don't think it'll be a secret anymore.

IGN: Last question, what would you say to fans of Superman who are interested in reading this comic book?

Romita: It's different. And I know it's hard to do something different for a character that's been around for 150 years or whatever it is. [Laughs] But this is a great attempt at doing something different, and of course there are some great minds involved.
