September 2, 2015: Dan Jurgens Talks About "Superman: Lois & Clark"

Superman: Lois & Clark #3 "Superman: Lois & Clark" is a new comic book series written by Dan Jurgens in which it is revealed that the pre-New 52 versions of Lois Lane and Clark Kent are living in hiding in the current continuity of the DC Universe.

During "Convergence", we saw that this version of Lois and Clark are married and celebrated the birth of their son, Jon. When we meet them in issue #1 of "Superman: Lois & Clark" Jon is now 9 years old, and the fact that the other version of Superman has had his secret identity revealed to the world is a major development to them.

Newsarama.com spoke with Dan Jurgens to find out more about this new comic book series...

Why do you think readers are interested in - and why are you interested as a writer interested in - this version of Superman?

Jurgens: I think this Superman will appeal to readers because he has a rich and deep history.

One of the things readers have wrestled with, in terms of the "New 52," is that, by starting five years into the universe, they often felt as if the characters lacked context. While some of that freed writers to take characters in new directions, it also meant there could be a lack of understanding about who the characters are and how they relate to one another.

These characters have a past that is essential to the characters they are now, just as our pasts are essential to who we are. That's what forms their character.

OK, but they're not the Clark and Lois they used to be, simply because they're not in that same world. So how would you describe the life, and I guess the priorities, of Lois and Clark in your series? How are they the same and how are they different than other iterations of these characters?

Jurgens: Clark and Lois' most notable priority is keeping Jon safe. That's one of the reasons they live in rather secretive fashion.

But at the same time, this is Superman. He understands his responsibility to earth and the people around him. Preserving all of that is mission one, and just like any parent's job, will sometimes conflict with his home life.

This is not the life they enjoyed while working at The Daily Planet. There are substantial differences.
