April 28, 2015: Dallas Superman-Policeman Surprises Sick Boy

Damon and Bryce Senior Cpl. Damon Cole of the Dallas Police Department enjoys dressing up as Superman to attending community events and visit sick children. Earlier this month he made an 11-hour trip in his tricked-out Superman car to visit 7-year-old Bryce Schottel in Smithton, Illinois, who is undergoing treatment for a stomach tumor.

Cole made the trip on his own time, at his own expense.

The father of a 7-year-old girl, Cole said he had never met Bryce or his family before but learned about them through a post on a police association website. He takes part in Heroes, Cops & Kids, a voluntary organization of police officers and other community leaders.

"It inspired me," Cole said of learning about police efforts in Bryce's home town to support and encourage him.

After reaching out to the Schottel family through a police contact, Cole made arrangements to make a visit on April 15, the date of a local police outreach event.

He drove to the southern Illinois town on April 14 and the next morning made visits to each class at Bryce's school, Smithton Elementary. Although his illness prevents Bryce from attending class at this time, the school has kept in close touch with him, Cole said.

After a couple hours at the school, Cole visited the Smithton Police Department, where he changed into his Superman costume before going to Bryce's house.

As soon as the boy answered the door, Colel presented him with an action figure that's "not your regular action figure" and later gave him a Superman cape.

"That turned out to be the biggest hit of all," Cole said of the cape. "He wouldn't take it off. He was in awe."
