Identity Crisis #1

May 26, 2004: Rags Morales Talks “Identity Crisis”

The Pulse caught up with artist Rags Morales to talks with him about his work on the up-coming DC seven issue miniseries, Identity Crisis. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

This story is one that runs the emotional gamut, but Morales said that isn't really a problem for him as an artist. "Drawing emotions is easy for me," he began. "I think that's the primary reason they wanted me for this project. I'm one of the better actors when it comes to drawing emotions - it's one of my strengths. When I was a baby penciler, I used to not really draw the stock poses and was more interested in interaction between the people. So a lot of my drawing was expressions and people interacting between other people, so a lot of my drawing was very expressional. It took me years and years to really get adequate at the 'stock poses,' the superhero stances, punches, flying - it wasn't easy for me, whatever the reason. Identity Crisis plays to my strengths. It's a mature story based on a lot of emotions and subtly. Some people have a knack for this. I'm one of them."

"I was brought to tears many times during this - there are some real tearjerker moments here and throughout the entire series," continued Morales. "As an artist I worry about doing my job right. I can't afford to be too emotionally involved in the characters. It's one of those things that won't hit me until after it's all done. The scope and importance of it - I know I've fallen in love with the characters I've been doing and everyone we're doing has a very human aspect to him or her. It's a very human book - even the bad guys have a sense of humanity about them and you really can't hate them as much as you want to."
