Smallville

October 18, 2001: Reactions to "Smallville"

As soon as the pilot episode of "Smallville" concluded, I caught up with various Superman-related writers and artists to get their reactions about the new TV show. Here's what they had to say...

Mark Waid (JLA):

I thought it was BRILLIANT.

EVERYTHING worked for me. A meteor shower cover is the perfect answer to why NORAD doesn't come after the rocket. Lana's necklace. Young parents who can provide conflict. And, of course, "It's all my fault!", which was a JAW-DROPPINGLY BRILLIANT way to give this Clark his motivation.

Oh, my GOD. If only DC could get it one-TENTH that right...

Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner (Pro):

Amanda Conner and I really loved the new series A LOT! Making it modern day was a good idea. I thought the beginning rocked and loved the Lex Luthor character as well. A really good beginning to what looks like one of the better shows this Fall. My only problem was that I wish it was a two hour episode.

Peter David (Supergirl):

I thought they did a very nice job. I have a detailed review in this week's CBG (Comics Buyer's Guide).

Jim Nolt (author of "The Adventures Continue"):

For the most part, I enjoyed Smallville. The only thing I didn't like was some of the violence. I'm just not into that and it never impresses me. I guess I feel like Perry White in "No Holds Barred" [episode of the 1950s Superman TV show] when he turned down the sound on the television because he didn't like the sound of the crowd out for blood.
