George Reeves

August 25, 2007: George Reeves Memorial Day

George Reeves will be honored on September 1st in Clarion County, Iowa where he was born.

Active military, reserves, veterans, National Guard, police, firefighters, EMTs and ambulance personnel will all receive a discount on tickets to the "George Reeves Day, Heroes in the Heartland," to be held at the Heartland Museum, 119 Ninth St. S.W., on U.S. Highway 3 in Clarion.

Museum exhibits will open at 9:30 a.m., and some of the objects on exhibit are borrowed for the occasion.

"Carmine Romeo, of New York, is a George Reeves collector," Veronica Guyader, of Woolstock, national director of the George Reeves Memorial told The Messenger newspaper. "He's bringing the Superman S, trunks, part of the cape and the Clark Kent shirt and tie. Chance McFadden, of Fort Madison, also is a Superman collector and he'll bring his collection just for the day."

Unseen photos of George Reeves will be on exhibit, Guyader added, and episodes of the early "Adventures of Superman" will be shown free throughout the day.

The "George Reeves Life Display" will be unveiled at 10 a.m., and at 1 p.m. awards and remarks about the Woolstock Heritage Society and George Reeves Memorial will be made.

A showing of the film "Coming Home to Woolstock: Birthplace of George Reeves" will be at 2 p.m. in the opera house at the museum, and from 3 to 4 p.m. will be a presentation by Ron and Katie Routh, of Norwalk, parents of the 2006 Superman, Brandon Routh.

From 4 to 7 p.m. there will be tours of the Pease family home, birthplace of George Reeves, in Woolstock, and a dessert social will be 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Woolstock.

"We're raising money to restore the birthplace of George Reeves," Guyader said. "We're following original plans for the exterior and interior as much as possible, but we're not doing the lathe and plaster rebuild because we're not trying to get on the historical register. That isn't possible because George was not famous when he was born."

The two rooms of the Pease house that George Reeves' family rented will be given entirely to historical memorabilia about him, Guyader said. It is hoped the rest of the house will display items from Woolstock's past - from information about the 1907 fire that destroyed much of the town to more recent times when the elevator blew up a few years back.

Package tickets to this year's "Heroes in the Heartland" celebration, which include the meals, are $15 by today and $18 at the door. Discounts apply with proper ID. Children 11 and younger are $3.

For those who don't want to eat, event tickets are $10 by today and $12 at the door.

The Heartland Museum and Woolstock Heritage Society's George Reeves Memorial are seeking volunteers. Anyone interested may contact the Heartland Museum at 602-6000 or Veronica Guyader at 835-9626 or at 839-5764.
