July 28, 2002: Superman on Television
A quick look at the U.S. TV Guide shows plenty of quality Superman viewing currently available to Superman fans. Here's a quick run-down of some of the shows U.S. fans should take note of:For fans of the 1950s Superman series, setting your VCR to record channel 51 (TV Land) every morning at 3.30am will enable you to re-watch "The Adventures of Superman" starring George Reeves.
Fans of George Reeves should also make sure they catch "George Reeves: The Perils of a Superhero" on Channel 21 (A&E). Recalling the life of the actor (1914-59), best known for playing TV's Superman. The documentary looks at his acting career and the mystery surrounding his death, which, though ruled a suicide, remains in question. This 1 hour special will air on Wednesday July 31st at 8pm and again on August 1st at 12am.
Another treat for George Reeves fans is the "I Love Lucy Lucy Meets Superman" episode which will air on Channel 11 (KTTV) on Saturday July 3rd at 5pm. Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Lucy, who's impersonating Superman in this episode, which first aired on Jan. 14, 1957. She may act like a strange visitor from another planet, but she doesn't have powers or abilities far beyond those of mortal man. In fact, she's flirting with mortality when she gets stuck on the ledge outside her apartment---in a Superman suit---trying to make a grand entrance to Little Ricky's birthday party. Why she's there has to do with her competing with Caroline Appleby (Doris Singleton), who was planning a party for her son the same day. But at least it's comforting to know that Superman star George Reeves (who has a cameo) just might fly in (so to speak) to help.
For fans of Christopher Reeve's version of the Man of Steel, be sure to check out the SCI FI channel on Saturday August 10th starting from 5pm, as they'll be playing the Special Edition of "Superman: The Movie" back to back with "Superman II" (which will start at 8.30pm). The Special Edition of "Superman: The Movie" will air again on Sunday August 11th at 1am.
Fans of Superman cartoons should also check their local guide for airing schedules of "Superman: The Animated Series" and "Super Friends" cartoons showing on Cartoon Network.
